15-vuotias Avani Yadav muutti Intiasta Suomeen kolme vuotta sitten. Vuosi muuton jälkeen valokuvauksesta kiinnostunut Avani osallistui ystäviensä kanssa Kaikki kuvaa -kilpailuun elokuvalla New Girl in the City, joka voitti parhaan fiktioelokuvan palkinnon.

Miten innostuit elokuvanteosta?
Leikkasin ensimmäisen videoni kun olin 10 tai 11-vuotias. Oli isäni syntymäpäivä ja halusin antaa hänelle jotain muuta kun kortin, joten avasin tietokoneeni ja valitsin pari kuvaa isästä ja minusta, leikkasin ne yhteen ja lisäsin taustamusiikkia. Se oli ensimmäinen videotyöni.
2017 osallistuit Kaikki kuvaa -kilpailuun elokuvalla New girl in the city ja voitit palkinnon parhaasta fiktioelokuvasta. Miten elokuva syntyi?
Minulla on ystäväporukka koulussa ja tiesin, että haluan tehdä elokuvan yhdessä heidän kanssaan. Istuimme alas ideoimaan eri tarinoita ja keskustellessa huomasimme, että asia joka meitä kaikkia yhdistää on se, että olemme jostain muualta päin maailmaa ja meillä kaikilla on ollut vaikea sopeutua uuteen kulttuuriin. Kilpailun teema oli tasa-arvo, ja halusimme yhdistää omat kokemuksemme ulkomaille muutosta sen kanssa. Niin tarina muodostui.
Ja sitten taas kuvausten suhteen kokeilimme eri lokaatioita. Katsoimme paikkoja ystäviemme luona ja päähenkilön koulu taas on meidän koulumme. Kaikista lokaatioista poimimme ne, jotka tarinan kannalta toimivat parhaiten.

Oliko elokuvan tekeminen pitkä prosessi?
Kyllä oli! Tilanne eli koko ajan. Ensin päätimme jotain ja kun se ei toiminut, niin kokeilimme jotain muuta. Meidän piti tehdä kuvausaikataulu siitä milloin kuvaamme mitäkin kohtia. Lisäyksenä, että tämä oli yksi ensimmäisistä kerroista kun kuvasin jotain oikeasti ja se osoittautui melko vaikeaksi. Etenkin kuvaaminen niin, että kuva ei ollut epäskarppi tai kamera tärissyt. Myös valaistuksen asettelu ja tekniset asiat olivat haastavia.
Mikä mielestäsi oli vaikeinta elokuvan tekemisessä?
On tehtävä paljon järjestelyjä ja tarkailtava näyttelijöitä, niin että he sanovat oikeat vuorosanat oikeaan aikaan. Ison tiimin koordinoiminen ja kasassa pitäminen oli vaikeaa. Aina jollakin oli joku hyvä idea, ja saimme ajatella luovasti, mutta samalla piti kuitenkin olla käytännöllinen.
Mitä elokuvantekoprosessi on opettanut sinulle?
Olen elokuvan tekemisen kautta ymmärtänyt, että media jota kulutamme todella vaikuttaa meihin. Kuulemillamme tarinoilla, riippumatta siitä ovatko ne kirjoista, elokuvista tai lyhytelokuvista, on todella suuri vaikutus meihin ja tapaamme ajatella. Ne koskettavat meitä ja mieliämme. Tunsin sen todella tehdessäni tätä elokuvaa.
Onko suunnitelmissa tehdä lisää elokuvia?
Kyllä, se olisi hienoa jos aika antaa myöden. Tällä hetkellä harrastan valokuvausta ja minulla on omat nettisivut jonne laitan kuviani.
Mitä vinkkejä haluat antaa niille, jotka haluavat tehdä elokuvan, mutta eivät tiedä mistä aloittaa?
Jos olet kiinnostuneempi leikkauksesta, kuten minä olin, niin hyvä tapa aloittaa on leikkaamalla kuvia ja pätkiä yhteen. Tutkia mitä niistä syntyy ja millaisen elokuvan niistä voisi tehdä. Siinä samalla ohjelma jota käytät tulee tutuksi. Ja, jos todella haluat aloittaa elokuvan tekemisen, niin nappaa kamera käteen ja harjoittele sillä. Ensimmäinen askel on laittaa kamera päälle ja vaan antaa mennä. Pian saat jutusta kiinni ja ymmärrät mitä tehdä. Antaa sen mennä itsestään.

Avani Yadav (15 years) moved to Finland from India 3 years ago. Being into photography she decided to take part in the Kaikki kuvaa -film competition together with her friends and ended up winning the prize for best fiction film.

How did you get into filmmaking?
My first film I made or edited was when I was 10 or 11 years old and it was for my dad’s birthday. I made all theses little cards for him, but thought I should do something different this time. So I just opened up my computer and took like a few pictures of me and my dad together, put some background music and that was my first film.
In 2017 you entered your film New girl in the city to Kaikki kuvaa competition and won prize for best fiction film. Can you tell me a little bit about the making of the film?
We have this group of friends at school and I knew I wanted to make a film together with them. We sat down together and brain stormed what kind of story we wanted to tell. The only thing we all had in common is we’re all from abroad and we’ve all had the struggle of fitting in to a new culture. So we wanted to bring that out and the theme was equality, so we also wanted to pair that with our experiences of moving abroad. That’s how the story was formed.
Where as for the filming part we kind of experimented with different locations. We took our school for the school of the girl (main character) and our friends houses. And that’s how we picked the different locations.

Was it a long process making the film?
Yeah, it definitely was. It was an evolving process. We first decided on something and when that didn’t work out we did something else. We had to make a time table of when we were going to film what parts of the film. And also filming for the first time. This was on of the first times I was actually filming so it was quite hard to get the hang of actually filming without the camera being too shaky, adjusting the lighting and all the technical things.
What did you find as most difficult when making this film?
Yeah, there’s a lot of organisation to do and managing all the actors, make them say the right dialogue at the right time. So co-ordinating all the team members together was quite difficult. There was always ideas popping from everywhere and we had to think practically, but also be creative at the same time. So the over all process of organising so many people into one film was really difficult.
What has the filmmaking process taught you?
I have realised through filmmaking that the kind of media we consume really influences us. So the stories we hear, whether their from books or movies or short films like this, they really have an impact on us and the way we think and they touch us and our minds. That I really felt when I made this film.
Any plans to make another film?
Yeah I’d love to if I get the time. Right now I’m more into photography and I have q website of my own where I post the pictures.
Any tips you want to give to those who want to make a film, but don’t know where to start?
So maybe if you’re more into editing you could start the way I did. So it’s basically picking up a few pictures or videos online, putting them together seeing what kind of film you could make working around with the software. And if you really want to start filmmaking you could just go out with your camera and try out something different. The first step is just turning your camera on and then just getting going. Then soon you’ll realise where to go by yourself. It kind of forms on its own.
